After the Sporting Braga defeat, Panathinaikos could only settle for a place in the UEFA Europa League. The Greek side will host Villarreal at the Olympic Stadium of Athens.
Panathinaikos were drawn in Group F alongside Rennes, Villarreal and Maccabi Haifa.
Ahead of the game, Panathinaikos thrashed Panetolikos (5-0) to maintain their good start in the Greek Super League.
Visitors Villarreal CF finished 5th in the Spanish La Liga last season to book their place in the URL. The Yellow Submarines have also won the competition once in the 2020–21 season.
In preparation for the game, Villarreal defeated Almeria 2-1 last weekend courtesy of goals from Gerard Moreno and Alexander Sorloth.
