HOLY. COW. That’s really the only way to describe this experience. We spent our afternoon with Julia, a local Athenian and expert on the area. From the moment we began the food tour, we knew that we were in excellent hands. We began our Athens food tour by meeting at Crème Royale where we met the rest of our group for a small Greek breakfast pastry called a Bougatsa. This was definitely the sweetest part of our journey and an excellent way to kick the food tour off. After getting a taste of the sweet, we made our way to Evripidou Street for a smell of the various spices & herbs that make Greek food so special. We spent some time observing locals going about their regular routine of picking the best ingredients the markets had to offer before making our way to the olive stand.
The olives were hands down the most eventful part of the tour. There we sampled more olives than we ever dreamed we would. From sweet to bitter, wrinkled to round, and every color under the sun, we got to taste every regional Greek flavor you could think of. This was definitely near the top of the highlights during the tour.
After eating our weight in olives, we made our way to a local shop where Julia made us her homemade Tzatziki Sauce. We watched in awe as she made it in front of us before serving it on Paximadi Bread and slices of cucumber. This was paired with some breakfast wine and meats/cheeses. This was unquestionably our favorite part of the entire experience. Her homemade Tzatziki Sauce is one of a kind and we felt so blessed to be able to eat it.
After leaving we made our way to a few more stops, including a street food stand where the locals like to go. We learned how to make “The Perfect Bite” before walking into Central Market where we sampled some fish soup and wandered about the fish market. After weaving our way through the various stands of fish, we made it to our final stop where anchovies, calamari, zucchini bread, and cooked legumes awaited us. We washed it down with some Raki and red wine before saying our good-byes to our lovely guide and group.
This experience felt so personal and unique. We cannot say enough good things about Julia or the service she provides. If you would like to take on this experience yourself, then please click the below link to book her for a tour or an online cooking class with her from the comfort of your home:

This SOOO makes me want to go to Greece and try the food!
The Culinary Letdown: A Californian Quest for Gourmet in Greece:
When our food-obsessed group, proudly wearing our Californian foodie badges, decided to embark on a culinary journey to Athens, our spirits were as high as the ancient Acropolis. The land that gifted the world democracy surely had a plethora of flavors awaiting us. Instead, we were met with a flavor plateau that left us yearning for more.
The perpetual offering of souvlakis with unapologetically stale bread became a predictable fixture of our Athenian dining experience. The red and green bell peppers dolmas, while vibrant on the plate, echoed a monotonous tone on our palates. We couldn't help but wonder: Where was the fresh baked bread warm from the hearth? Or the comforting embrace of a hot soup or the gentle warmth of a well-brewed tea? Aspects that should have been staples in such a storied land.
Ironically, back in the Golden State, our local Whole Foods flaunts an olive bar that is reminiscent of a mini Mediterranean festival. Yet, in Athens, supermarkets seemed to treat olives with casual indifference, limiting their variety and essence.
Having explored more than 80 establishments across mainland Greece and its islands, our enthusiasm began to wane. We found ourselves booking a hasty weekend retreat to the gastronomic haven of Antalya, Turkey. And what a relief that was! Turkey, with its rich culinary canvas, proved to be a stark contrast. The food was not just food – it was art, it was a story, it was, dare we say, seductive
Oooo I just came back from my first time in Greece and loved it! I will definitely be going back and when I do I’m going to book this tour. Looks amazing. Greek food is so delicious. I also tried anchovies for the first time when I was there and was shocked by how much I loved them! They always looked so gross to me but they were actually delicious!
Nice but veery short tour.
It's a Breakfast wine 😂😂😂❤
Greece is a foodie mecca!
Olives come to many sizes and many different tastes like sweet and bitter. Did you know that actually you can make a sweet out of olives? But I object strongly in the way miss Julia makes tzatziki. We don't dry at all the cucumber we add to the mix of the ingredients and we also add in it a big spoon of vinegar thus making a fresh but digestive for all that meat you accompany it.
Olives are great. What you talking about Willis
Yummy
You Both Are Looking To Cute .
Lots of Love From Bottom of Heart .
Thank you guys for visiting my country! Greece 🇬🇷 is amazing!!
We went on Julia's Athens Food Tour in June 2022. My wife, Adriana, said this was the highlight of our 2 week Greek vacation. Julia was a wonderful hostess and guide. Do not miss this if you will have some free time in Athens! Julia and her husband George are so friendly. We really enjoyed ourselves.
Greek kitchen 2nd in the world!!!!!
These two seem so juvenile. He never ate olives??? Nice to take a break from living off of junk food in their college town that mommy & daddy paid for to try presenting Lovely Greek food in the eyes of simpletons again thanks to mommy & daddies money. Go find a McDonald's Squirt and leave presenting culture to the adults.
I live in Athens. You found and tasted really traditional food.bravo
