In northern Greece, near the town of Kozani, archaeologists unearthed the skeleton of a woman who lived in the 1st century BC. What surprised scientists the most was that the woman was lying on a bronze bed, writes the Greek Reporter.
Although there is evidence that people were often buried in beds in ancient times, this was the first time that archaeologists have unearthed a person buried in this way in Greece.
In other excavations, researchers found bedding, but this is the first time that an entire bed has been preserved. Most of the bed, which was decorated with the symbols of the Greek god Apollo, was made of bronze, which is why it has survived for thousands of years. The wooden parts of the bed, unfortunately, decayed before they were excavated.
As for the skeleton itself, the identity of the woman is still unknown. Luxuries were buried around her, and she herself was found with golden bay leaves around her head. Experts believe they were woven into the wreath she wore.
The woman was middle-aged and , presumably belonged to the royal family, since other archaeological finds have been found in the area, indicating that royalty settled here. However, there is also the possibility that she was part of a religious community, which also explains the richness of the items buried with her.
