The well-received concert by Greek composer and musician Pericles Kanaris in New York in June 2022 will be broadcast by Greek public TV to the whole world.

The concert will be broadcast on ERT World on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at 13:00 and repeated at 00:00 midnight Greek time. The concert will be broadcast on the same day by the Voice of Greece, at 16:00 and again at 02:00 after midnight. It will also be available via ERTFLIX from January 30, 2023.

It is the first time that ERT World broadcasts a concert by a Greek artist living abroad, attempting to introduce the work of acclaimed artists of the Greek diaspora to Greeks abroad and beyond.

The concert, titled “Up for Air”, was held at Symphony Space, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It signaled the return of Kanaris to live performances after the pandemic.

“Playing again after two and a half years was at the same time a challenging and liberating experience,” Kanaris said at the time.

“What we took for granted in the past as normal is something that we now have to fight to reestablish and we did just that. The reaction of the audience at the end justified it all and we could not have asked for a better reward.”

Kanaris’ concert based on the poetry of famous Greek and international poets

He performed songs based on the poetry of Constantine P. Kavafy, T.S Eliot, Manos Eleftheriou, and others who Kanaris said provided him with inspiration over the years. He presented the pieces in his own orchestration.

Kanaris belongs to the tradition of Greek composers who set poetry to music that began with the generation of the ’60s and composers such as Manos Hatzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis.

He is flanked by his band consisting of some of the leading musicians of the New York music scene such as Gary Schreiner (accordion, harmonica, keyboards), Richard Hammond (bass), Peter Douskalis (guitars, lute, assistant musical director ) and Giancarlo DeTrizio (drums/percussion). His guests are the distinguished baritone Nektarios Antoniou and the evergreen bouzouki soloist, Agapitos Maganaris.

The New York Times has recognized in his music “Greek identity with a global sound.”

The concert took place under the auspices of the Consulate General of Greece in New York.
