Giving back to the community with free souvlaki

For six days over a two-week period in June, Taste of Cyprus gave back to the community by offering free souvlakia.

It was to mark their reopening and also support struggling families in the community with the rising costs of living.

Almost 500 souvlakia were given away.

Owner Michael told Neos Kosmos he was surprised how many people came through.

The food truck was also closed for an extended period of time because of a knee injury he suffered.

“I thought to give back to the community again since I was starting up again and interest rates going up, it’s ridiculous at the moment,” he said.

He added that even for vendors like him, as he went to get soft drinks after opening up again, and saw they have almost doubled in price.

Slices Family Restaurant in Keilor has allowed Taste of Cyprus to operate in their car park since reopening and Michael and Mr Pitta and Lakes Fresh Food supplied pites and salads.

“On the second week I asked them because it was getting a bit too much for me, so I asked them if they can donate anything.”

During COVID, he gave food out and has done a similar offer in the past with souvlakia.

“I went shopping for pasta, sugar, essential things and canned food and noodles and everything and gave them away to customers as well. The ones who were struggling.”
