Family members, friends, fellow performers and fans gathered at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia on Sunday for a memorial service marking 40 days since the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis.

Mazonakis died on September 9 at the age of 54. The service began at 9:30 a.m., following the Divine Liturgy, in the neighborhood where the singer grew up.

Family, Friends and Fellow Artists Attend

Mazonakis’ mother, Kleio, arrived at the church accompanied by her daughter Maria. His father, Manolis Mazonakis, and older sister Vaso also attended.

Speaking to television reporters, Greek singer Angela Dimitriou recalled her relationship with the late singer.

“For me, Giorgos was the best thing I had in my life. And he always will be,” she said.

She described Mazonakis as a popular performer with a strong sense of humor and a distinctive influence on Greek entertainment.

“Always remember him,” she added.

Memorial Continues at Athens Cemetery

Following the church service, a graveside memorial prayer was held at Mazonakis’ burial site in the Third Cemetery of Athens. Before the cemetery ceremony, the family received condolences from mourners at a traditional memorial gathering.

Additional security measures were implemented at both the church and cemetery because of the large number of people attending.

The commemorations took place one day before the 40th day following Mazonakis’ death, a customary occasion for memorial prayers (mnimosino) in the Greek Orthodox tradition.

What is known about Mazonakis’ death

Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest at a private medical practice in Athens’s Kolonaki neighborhood, where he had gone for a planned plasmapheresis procedure. He was taken to Elpis Hospital without a pulse or spontaneous breathing. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

The unanswered question is what triggered the arrest. The initial postmortem examination did not establish a definitive underlying cause. More recent reporting has described toxicology findings involving several substances, including propofol and midazolam, but further analysis is still needed to establish their concentrations and any role in his death.

Two doctors were arrested in connection with his death on September 10. They were subsequently ordered held in pretrial detention on a homicide charge alleging that they knowingly accepted the risk of a fatal outcome. According to ERT, they denied intent.

Scrutiny of anti-aging treatments

The case has also brought renewed attention to the evidence behind plasma-based anti-aging treatments.

Following the singer’s death, the Hellenic Society of Hematology warned against unproven “regenerative” therapies, distinguishing established medical applications from unsupported rejuvenation claims.
