Austrians’ Interest to Visit Greece Increases Significantly

The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) has stressed that Greece destinations have turned the eyes of Austrian travellers whose interest in the Hellenic Republic has marked a significant increase.

In addition, based on a report provided by the Ruefa Reisekompass 2023 report, Greece accounts for a total of 21 per cent share of Austrians’ bookings for the holidays, reports.

Besides Austria, citizens from the following countries account for a significant share of booking for holidays:

  • Spain – 9 per cent
  • Turkey- 9 per cent
  • Italy – 7 per cent

At the same time, in order to meet the demand, Austrian Airlines have announced that they will be launching direct flights to 21 destinations in the Hellenic Republic, including Thessaloniki, Athens, Kavala, Volos, Skyros, Skiathos, Preveza,  Kefalonia, Corfu,  Zakynthos,  Kalamata, Araxos,  Rhodes, Kos, Karpathos, Samos, Limnos, Mykonos, Santorini, Heraklion and Chania.

It has been reported that tourist traffic from Austria to Greece surged by 13.94 per cent for a period from January until November last year compared to the pre-pandemic levels, based on the figures provided by Austria’s national statistical office.

According to the figures provided by Reisekompass, a total of 89 per cent of citizens of Austria are planning to travel in Austria and abroad this year.

The same reveals that a total of 16 per cent plan to extend their vacation into the low tourist season, while the majority plans to travel at least twice this year with a budget of at least 1,700 euros per person, or up by 150 euros compared to 2022 figures.

It has been reported that about 75 per cent stressed that they plan to travel somewhere in Europe.

Reisekompass report shows that the average vacation duration is 18 days, of them 11 are in summer with sea and sun holidays remaining the main choice, followed by city breaks, active holidays, wellness tourism and educational trips.

According to the Greek Travel Pages report, the Hellenic Republic together with Italy, Spain, Croatia and Germany are the main countries that Austrian tourists wish to visit this year.

The data provided by Fraport regarding travel traffic last year showed that a total of 31 million passengers were recorded at the regional airports of the Hellenic Republic last year.

The Tourism Minister of Greece, Vassilis Kikilias said that these figures show a more significant number compared to pre-pandemic levels, adding that these figures confirmed the success of the tourism industry last year, as well as the strengthening of the national economy.
